grant to hire another police offic er at Monday meeting said City Clerk Jean Starkey Wednesday The city would be required to pay 25 percent of the sal ary by the matching funds grant according to Mayor Robert Smith Part of President crime package the grant was available to all local 'Municipalities Though the deadline for appli cation is Oct 15 Smith said the city has two shots at receiving Staff Authorities from various law enforcement agencies in Jackson and Madison counties combed the northeast end of Grant Moun tain Wednesday looking for a man who stole a Chevrolet Corvette in Huntsville and later abandoned it outside Scottsboro after a high speed chase At press time Wednesday night the man had not been found Authorities had been searching for him since approxi mately 7:30 am Participating in the search were officials from the Scottsboro Police Department Jackson County Sheriffs Department Madison County Department Huntsville Police Department State Huntsville office and Game and ish Department According to reports the white Corvette was stolen as a woman was leaving a residence in Huntsville early Wednesday The woman started to back out of the driveway and stopped so she could get out and put some mail in the mailbox As the woman was walking back to the car she reportedly saw a man climb into the seat Authorities said the woman ran to the passenger side of the car opened the door and yelled at the man as he backed the vehicle out of the driveway The woman was able to retrieve her purse before the suspect took off with the car according to reports Scottsboro police were first contacted about the incident around 7 am and were told the suspect may be heading in their direction on Highway 72 Offic ers responded to the call and were heading west on the highway in Scottsboro Police jurisdiction outside the city limits when they observed the vehicle pass them on the other side of the road as it was heading in the opposite direction Police immediately turned around and began pursuing the man around 7:20 am According to reports the suspect was travel ing 120 miles per hour on High way 72 at one point in the chase The officer who was pursuing the suspect briefly lost sight of the Corvette according to reports The vehicle was later located at 7:35 am on a remote dirt road in a wooded area off County Road 112 The suspect however was nowhere in sight Authorities then began a thor ough search of the area using a helicopter and the Huntsville Police canine unit At the height of the search around 30 to 40 men were combing the area The suspect is described as a black man standing and weighing 170 pounds having short close cut hair and sporting a gold tooth He was wearing a brown leather jacket Although the Huntsville Police Department pulled out of the search Wednesday afternoon local authorities were planning to continue looking for the man throughout the night if necessary just going to have to ride the roads right now capital expenses for the 1993 94 fiscal year or the first time ever the board approved a corporate wide budget as opposed to separate budgets for each entity Mason said the budget allows nearly $29 million $28989 million to be specific for oper ating expenses because of a moratorium Gov Jim olsom had placed on hospi tal and nursing home projects But that is no longer a threat since the moratorium expired Sept 1 according to hospital controller Bill Latham The expansion plans moved another step closer to reality Tuesday when the board of direc tors approved contracting the Robins and Morton Group in Bir mingham to provide construction management services for the job The Robins and Morton Group has handled all the recent major construction projects for Hunts ville Hospital Guntersville Arab Hospital and Boaz Albertville Hospital all of which are Health Mason said only half jokingly But Mason said the authority will continue to pursue other debts owed to them outside of
